New Solo Guitar Recording - ONLY HUGH

My new solo fingerstyle guitar release is now available on all digital platforms. The album features four original tunes, a couple of pop tunes from my youth, ‘Wide Eyed and Legless’ (Andy Fairweather-Low), ‘Rainy Days and Mondays’ (Roger Nicholls/Paul Williams), tunes by Monk, Ellington and Harold Arlen and a Gospel Classic. It was recorded in August 2021 by Ciaran Buckley Dorman with cover artwork by John Salinero. I am particularly thrilled as this is my first venture into the challenging but personally rewarding world of solo guitar.

Artist-in-Residence

Throughout April and May I completed my artist-in-residence appointment at the Source Arts Centre, Thurles. It was the first in a series of such appointments by the Improvised Music Company and Arts council of Ireland. I found it to be a wonderfully positive experience, working on material for my upcoming solo guitar project and interacting with some local (and very talented) musicians. The Source is a wonderful venue and Director Brendan Maher was the perfect host. I looking forward to returning in the not too distant future.

Artist-in-Residence Announcement

I am delighted to be selected as IMC Artist-in-Residence at the Source Arts centre, Thurles.

The IMC Music Residency, in collaboration with arts centres around the country, offers artists professionally remunerated time and space to develop and perform work with a deep sense of space, informed by community involvement.

Set in the heart of Thurles town and on the banks of the River Suir, The Source Arts Centre has a year-round programme of cultural events including theatre, live music, comedy, dance, art-house cinema, children’s theatre, youth arts, and ballet. The Source shares a building with Thurles Library. The Source Gallery is a shared space programmed year-round by both The Source Arts Centre and Thurles Library.

Director Brendan Maher says: “The Source Arts Centre is delighted to welcome jazz musician Hugh Buckley to Thurles to take part in this residency in association with the Improvised Music Company. In what is a strong region for music, we look to support the local musicians involved in creating new opportunities for them to develop and enhance their craft and widening the scope and interest in the guitar.”

Jazz Blind Date and Icons of Jazz

I was delighted to have two gigs recently, both hosted by the Improvised Music Company. The first, Blind Date Jazz was an interesting concept and featured a duo (w/ bassist Derek Whyte. Both artists are unknown to each other prior to the performance and only revealed three quarter ways through the performance. There was not even prior knowledge as to with what instrument we would be performing. The whole performance and interview can be viewed on youtube https://youtu.be/ilKDE9O2ZnE

The second will be available for view on March 20th. Icons of Jazz, The Hugh Buckley Organ Trio w/ Darragh Hennessy, organ and Dominic Mullan on drums, perform the music of Wes Montgomery. Details @ https://www.improvisedmusic.ie/events/

It was great to get out and play some music with real people, the first time in exactly a year. Roll on the good times…
